School Tax Disability Exemption in Chatham County, GA

← Back to Chatham County Property Taxes

If you’re permanently and totally disabled, Chatham County offers a school tax exemption similar to the senior exemption — but without an age requirement. It’s designed for homeowners of any age who can no longer work due to disability.

Who Qualifies

  • Own and occupy the home as your primary residence
  • Be totally and permanently disabled (no minimum age)
  • Household net income at or below the same threshold used for the senior school exemption (Social Security and most retirement/disability income is excluded from the calculation)

Disability is generally documented with a certification from a licensed physician, or an award letter from the Social Security Administration (SSA) or Veterans Affairs (VA) confirming permanent and total disability. Like the senior exemption, this exemption applies against the school (SCCPSS) portion of your bill.

How and When to Apply

File with the Chatham County Board of Assessors, 222 West Oglethorpe Ave., Suite 113, Savannah, GA 31401, (912) 652-7271. Deadline: April 1 of the tax year. Bring:

  • Georgia driver’s license or ID showing the property address
  • Physician’s disability certification, or SSA/VA disability award letter
  • Prior-year federal and state income tax returns

You must already have (or apply concurrently for) a standard homestead exemption on the property. The exemption is subject to periodic renewal verification since disability status and income can change; the Board of Assessors will advise if and when re-certification is required.

Exact dollar amounts and income thresholds are set by local legislation and can change; confirm current figures with the Chatham County Board of Assessors (912-652-7271) before applying. Questions about how this affects your home search? Contact us.
